A question often asked in the showroom. Are wood burning stoves bad for the environment? This answer is simple. No. People are talking more and more about the clean air act and the ‘ban’ of wood burning stoves. The press are really having field day on this matter, and why wouldn’t they, we all love our wood-burning stoves and rely on them on a day-to-day basis. Its bound to get a reaction.
When you look into this matter in depth you quickly realise that the discussion is not on polluting the environment (Because burning wood is virtually carbon neutral and is one of the best forms of heating for the environment) but polluting the air in which we breath in when the fire is on. Like the car industry, stove manufactures have been working around the clock to make their stoves more efficient, reducing the particulates released when the stove is going through its burn cycle. These new stoves and all the stoves we supply at Auldton Stoves are some of the cleanest and most efficient on the market.
Wood is one of the most environmentally friendly fuels that can be used. It is a sustainable renewable energy and virtually carbon neutral. The natural cycle of planting and harvesting trees has created a sustainable process that will provide carbon neutral solid fuel far into the future. CO2 is taken out of the atmosphere by growing trees at the same time as it is released by the combustion of the previous harvest. To reflect this closed loop CO2 cycle the carbon factor for wood logs in the official software used to measure the energy efficiency of homes (SAP) is 0.008kg of carbon per kW compared with 0.198kg for gas, 0.274kg for oil and 0.517kg for electricity.
